The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is a dynamic ensemble of some of the world’s finest musicians. The fifth oldest symphony in the United States and the oldest orchestra in Ohio, the CSO was founded in 1895. Previous music directors of this venerable, 113-year-old orchestra include Leopold Stokowski, Fritz Reiner, Eugene Goossens and Max Rudolph. Today, under the artistic leadership of Paavo Järvi, the CSO has achieved international critical acclaim and an operating budget that consistently places it among America’s top 10 orchestras. The CSO is the umbrella institution that includes the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and through both, the orchestra has sold nearly 10 million recordings on the Telarc label.
The CSO also presents year-round family, community and education programs and concerts, including Lollipop and Young People’s concerts and the Classical Roots: Spiritual Heights. In addition, the CSO serves as the official orchestra of the annual May Festival and Cincinnati Opera and, as the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under conductor Erich Kunzel, presents 20 Pops concerts in Music Hall.
