Assistant Conductor
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
Position Summary: The assistant conductor will work closely with and be mentored by the Music Director, Paavo Järvi, in maintaining high artistic standards for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Conduct the CSO in education concerts which will include student Young People’s concerts as well as family Lollipop concerts. Develop these programs working closely with Education Department
- Cover and provide musical assistance to the Music Director and guest conductors for CSO rehearsals and concert programs, the May Festival (James Conlon, Music Director), as well as selected pops programs (Erich Kunzel, Pops Conductor) by addressing such issues as balance in the hall and conducting off-stage musicians as needed.
- Assist in the production of radio broadcasts and commercial recordings.
- Provide program research and library work as necessary.
- Serve as a public speaker for pre-concert lectures, school classroom visits, and community events.
- Provide conducting assistance to the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra.
- Other related duties may be assigned by the Music Director and CSO General Manager.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a strong background in orchestral conducting and demonstrated ability in developing and conducting education programs. Experience with community engagement concerts preferred. The ability to work effectively with the Music Director, other conductors, guest soloists, orchestra musicians, and staff is essential. This position requires residency in Cincinnati beginning late August/early September 2008. Must be available for the May 2 & 3, 2008 audition period in Cincinnati.

Application materials will be reviewed and selected finalists will be invited to audition, conducting the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on May 2 & 3, 2008. Invitations to audition will be extended no later than April 21, 2008.
Organization: The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is the fifth oldest orchestra in the United States and 2008-2009 will mark its 114th season. Paavo Järvi is Music Director and Erich Kunzel is Pops Conductor. It is a Group I orchestra with an operating budget of $33 million dollars and a 52-week contract. The Orchestra performs over 150 concerts annually including winter and summer season classical and pops concerts in Music Hall and Riverbend, its summer home, as well as international, domestic and regional tours, educational and outreach concerts, and as the orchestra for the Cincinnati May Festival and for the Cincinnati Opera. The Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestra release four recordings each season on the Telarc label.
