  Endowing the Future

Endowment gifts have provided the financial foundation upon which the Orchestra's success is founded. Funds are invested and professionally managed to provide annual income to support of operations.

For over 100 years, the Symphony & Pops have been integral parts of the social, intellectual, educational and economic fabric of this community.

The Orchestra serves as a place of enjoyment, an incentive for attracting new talent, a cultural ambassador and a source of pride.

For over 100 years, this community has nurtured and protected the sacred trust left us by our ancestors. During that time, the reputation of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra has grown. To meet the increasingly diverse tastes of its audience, the Orchestra has added new programs and activities.

Previous generations of Cincinnatians understood the need to provide a strong capital base. The CSO was one of the first orchestras to establish an endowment and, for many years, its endowment was larger than almost every other orchestra. The endowment is a permanent reminder of the importance of the Orchestra and a way for us to prepare for further musical achievement and service to the community. Without a strong endowment, the CSO could not hope to achieve the stature it has today as one of the country's pre-eminent orchestras.

The Orchestra is widely acknowledged to be one of a handful of "major league" orchestras in the nation. One of only 17 with year-round activities, in terms of artistic achievement and reputation, it is considered by its peers to be one of the top ten orchestras in the country.

A comparison with other orchestras reveals the CSO is run efficiently and effectively. It has been a leader in cost controls, increasing ticket sales and utilizing its assets to generate operating income.

However, the very nature of full-time symphony orchestras is such that operating income can never be expected to cover operating expenses. Contributed income, government grants and investment income. as well as earned income, are needed to meet expenses.

Historically, Cincinnatians have demonstrated their support for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in many ways, and the CSO continues to make every effort to accommodate contributors' needs and wishes.

The endowment welcomes outright contributions — in full or in installments — and deferred gifts. All contributions and estate provisions will receive appropriate credit and acknowledgment. Significant gifts might also provide special, perpetual recognition opportunities.

Gifts can be made in cash or securities, real property, life insurance and/or estate provisions, including bequests, charitable lead trusts, remainder interests in residences and/or life income gifts, such as pooled income funds, charitable gift annuities, deferred payment gift annuities, charitable remainder annuity trusts and charitable remainder unitrusts.

The CSO endowment offers exciting, enriching ways to cherish and honor someone special or to unite a family and perpetuate its name while benefiting the community at large. View the current list of endowed chairs and programs.
