Truls Mørk
Truls Mørk’s reputation as a cellist of fierce intensity and grace has been built on performances throughout the world. He regularly performs with orchestras such as the Berlin, Munich London and Oslo Philharmonics, Orchestre de Paris, Royal Concertgebouw, BBC Symphony and the symphony orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia. A highlight of his 2005-2006 season was a two-week residency with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic. Mr. Mørk made his Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra debut at Riverbend in 1996 and his CSO subscription debut at Music Hall in 1997. His most recent CSO appearance was in September 2003.

A committed performer of contemporary music, Truls Mørk recently participated in the world premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Concerto for Three Cellos with the NHK Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit. He gave the world premiere of Haflidi Hallgrimsson’s Cello Concerto (co-commissioned by the Olso Philharmonic, Iceland Symphony and Scottish Chamber Orchestra) as well as Matthias Pintscher’s Concerto with the Orchestre de Paris.

As a chamber musician, Truls Mørk performs numerous recitals and arranged the successful “Sixty Degrees North” series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He also tours as part of a trio comprising Gil Shaham on violin and Yefim Bronfman on piano.

Truls Mørk is an exclusive Virgin Classics artist and has recorded many of the great cello concertos by composers including Shostakovich, Dvořák, Britten, Elgar, Miakovsky and Prokofiev (the latter two with Paavo Järvi and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra). His most recent recording, of the Schumann Cello Concerto with Paavo Järvi and the Philharmonique de Radio France, was released in 2005. In 2002 Mr. Mørk won a Grammy Award for his recording of the Britten Cello Suites.

Initially taught by his father, John, Truls Mørk continued his studies with Frans Helmerson, Heinrich Schiff and Natalia Schakowskaya. He was a winner of the prestigious Naumburg Competition in 1986 and the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982. Mr. Mørk plays a rare Domenico Montagnana cello (1723), which was bought for him by SR Bank in Norway.
