If It Sounds Good, It Is Good! | May 2017
I am grateful for the many memories we’ve shared here at the Taft, and I’m excited for Pops summer concerts and our triumphant return to Music Hall in October.
This summer, our annual Independence Day concert is on Tuesday, July 4th at Riverbend Music Center. Our traditional “Salute to America” will include patriotic favorites as well as the richly diverse musical styles that define the American spirit, overflowing with energy, enthusiasm and optimism. I can’t wait to share and celebrate our musical heritage at Riverbend on July 4, including a dazzling display of Rozzi’s famous fireworks after the concert. Later that month, we’ll be performing during the postgame fireworks show at Great American Ball Park on Friday, July 21. We all hope the Reds will pull out a W, but regardless, I’m confident the Pops will remain undefeated! And that’s not all: the Pops will be performing several outdoor community concerts throughout the region during the summer. Stay tuned to the Pops Facebook page to keep up to date with all we have going on.
This month, the Pops performs for the first time with Ben Folds. A dazzling pianist, a brilliant composer and a consummate showman, he consistently blows audiences away with his creative, poignant— and often hilarious—songwriting and stage presence. For this one-night-only concert, we also have the real treat, to hear him perform his own Piano Concerto in addition to fully-orchestrated arrangements of some of his most popular songs. Ben Folds’ contributions to the Great American Song Book are only just beginning, and although I’ll be out of town, I will jealously be checking in with all my friends who will be rocking out with the Pops.
Our FINAL concert at the Taft is our “Superheroes!” Lollipops concert, in collaboration with Cincinnati Children’s Theater, on Saturday, June 10. We’ve taken many of our favorite Pops arrangements (many of which we’ve recorded!), added the effervescently talented kids of CCT, and a ZANY story-line to create an unforgettable experience that will thrill folks of all ages. I look forward to seeing you there as we wish the Taft Theatre adieu and bring on the new era of our Pops in Cincinnati.
