What's Interesting
Experience the legacy of Paul Laurence Dunbar, poet, author, and visionary from Dayton, Ohio whose life’s work set the stage for the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s. His powerful words—“To be able to interpret my own people through song and story, and to prove to the many that after all we are more human than African”—capture his mission to humanize African Americans and celebrate the universal human spirit. Join us for a special documentary screening of Paul Laurence Dunbar: Beyond the Mask, and witness how Dunbar’s dedication to expressing shared humanity blossomed over time and continues to inspire.
The evening will feature a performance by soprano Dr. Minnita Daniel-Cox accompanied by pianist Dr. Brandon Waddles. A Professor of Music at the University of Dayton, founder of the Dunbar Music Archive and co-founder of the Dunbar Library & Archive, Dr. Daniel-Cox has selected compositions whose lyrics were written by Mr. Dunbar.
Filmmaker Frederick Lewis, a professor at Ohio University, will be in attendance for the screening and participate in a special Q&A session following the film.
This program is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Reservations are required.
Note: The documentary includes historical images and scenes that reflect racial injustice and period-specific practices. Viewer discretion is advised. We recommend the film for ages 13 and up, or for younger viewers with parental guidance.
