What's Interesting

In recognition of the Jewish Cincinnati Bicentennial and presented with support from The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati, CSO Creative Partner Matthias Pintscher conducts Ensemble intercontemporain in Olga Neuwirth’s score which was written in 2018 for the commemoration of The November Pogrom—otherwise known as the 1938 Kristallnacht, which accompanies Hans Karl Breslauer’s silent film Die Stadt ohne Juden (“The City without Jews”), which was based on the 1922 book by Austrian writer and journalist Hugo Bettauer. Released in 1924, the film was intended to be a satire/social commentary on the antisemitic political and cultural movement of the 1920s, but today it serves as a shockingly visionary look at the fear of multiculturalism and the normalization of antisemitism more than a decade before The Holocaust. Neuwirth’s score is an interconnected web of sound and image that draws the audience into a nearly 100-year-old world.
