"I've put together a program around the idea of American musical identity. We'll hear how Charles Ives toyed with the rhythms of ragtime, Tania León fractured Cuban-American modernism, and how early New Englanders fused the sacred and secular into a vibrant tradition of Sacred Harp singing. American music has always been a stacking of influences, a mirror of ourselves."
—Timo Andres, composer, pianist and co-curator
American Perspective was the series launch of CSO Proof, a new experimental series where artists and audience share the same space—the stage at Music Hall.
Audience members experienced:
- A shorter, intermission-less performance with general admission seating
- An intimate and casual atmosphere
- A post-concert talk-back with Timo Andres

Get to Know Co-curator Timo Andres
Composer and pianist Timo Andres is one of the minds behind CSO Proof: An American Perspective. “The question of what constitutes ‘Americanness’ in art has long interested me,” he says. Andres shares announcements, music and stories on his website. Start with September’s edition, which features a sample of Andres’ music in collaboration with artist and producer Sufjan Stevens.

Oklahoma! and John Heginbotham
If you’re wondering where you’ve heard the name John Heginbotham, it might be from the Tony Awards. The 2019 revival of Oklahoma!, choreographed by Heginbotham, was nominated for eight Tonys and took home two, including Best Revival of a Musical. Heginbotham’s groundbreaking choreography, performed by Dance Heginbotham, was featured on CSO Proof: An American Perspective.

Sacred Harp Singing
This specific style of a capella singing is based on a choral tunebook called The Sacred Harp. It's easier to lsiten to than to describe; get a taste with a Spotify playlist of American folk hymns from within the Sacred Harp tradition. A deeply American song style, Sacred Harp singing is experiencing a resurgence of popularity across the country.

CSO Proof: A New Series
"The program will feature the music of Charles Ives, Tania León and Robin Holcomb as well as performances by the Cincinnati Sacred Harp Singers that demonstrate the relationship between the influences of ragtime, folk music, modernism, and sacred music in creating an American sound." —The Contemporary Ensemble

CSO Proof FAQ
-
Artists and audience share the same space on the stage of Music Hall in shorter, casual performances featuring elements of theater, lighting, and dance.
-
Performances run about 70 minutes with no intermission. Occasionally, there might be a post-concert talk back with the performance curator, or other opportunities to hang out and talk. Check our website for more info.
-
We hope that with each CSO Proof experience you are inspired by the fresh viewpoints of our musicians, guest artists and curators. Expect to expand your musical horizons and perceptions of how orchestral music can be experienced.
-
Each CSO Proof uses the spaces in Music Hall in different ways, however, the stage is a focal point of each performance. Seating is general admission, we recommend arriving early for best seating selection. Enter through the main doors of Music Hall on 1241 Elm Street. Doors open one hour prior to the performance, unless otherwise noted.
-
Young listeners age 6 and up are welcome at CSO Proof when accompanied by an adult. Some content may not be appropriate for young listeners. We will note this on the website. Everyone, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to enter the hall. For more information and concert recommendations, please call our box office at 513.381.3300.
-
Dress up, dress down, come as you are, just know that some performances may require you to get up, move around, and maybe even groove. Don’t worry, this won’t be one of those improv performances where the artists hand you the microphone and call on you to sing. How you choose to participate is up to you.
-
We have few, if any. Bring your drinks in. Dress as you wish. Applaud when you’re moved.
News & Media

"Looking around me last night, as the stage lights dropped to velvety black, with one bright white pillar illuminating pianist Timo Andres, I wasn’t in Cincinnati. I wasn’t at Music Hall. I was in every major, worldly theater. I was in Europe, I was in NYC. In that moment, as the audience dropped to hushed, taut attention, I saw the proof of just how far we’ve come."
-
"It’s obvious that the CSO has spared little to create a memorable evening and a successful launch of its new series."
